Paige DiFiore Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for HuluĬontrast is the second key component of the color analysis, according to Dina, and it looks at values - the lightness and darkness between your eyes, skin, and hair.Ĭontrast, she explained, is something people can change with things like makeup, hair dye, or colored contacts. My results ranged from "cool winter" to "soft autumn" to "soft summer." One result told me to avoid black the next said it was one of my best colors.Īctress Alexis Bledel also has dark hair, but her eyes are bright and cool-toned, making her contrast and clarity higher. Taking another approach, I tried the site, which promised to let me color analyze myself "like a PRO," but after an hour of analyzing dozens of photos of myself, I was still lost. ![]() So I ended up choosing winter colors, like emerald and black. The first question asked of me was which "colors you get the most compliments on when you wear them." But this was tricky: How could I be complimented on colors I never wear? Obviously, I'd mostly be complimented on wearing black if I usually wear black. ![]() I also don't think it would be useful for people of color to only see examples of white women. But my results were inconclusive and I wasn't sure about the methodology. In another attempt to find my season, I turned to the test on Jackson's site. The quiz based on Jackson's book only showed examples of white women - not very helpful to people of color. □ And gold jewelry works better on me, although silver doesn't look awful either.Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. Strawberry blonde hair as child that darkened to a somewhat mousy light brown but turns into a warmer blonde when the sun bleaches it… and since I'm lazy and low maintenance, I let that happen. I did, and the shade I wear is advertised "for very pale tones with very light yellow undertones"… that's warm, no? Whatever else it may be, this foundation is a miracle after years of wearing pink foundation that was never quite right! Other than that, I tan into a nice bronze shade and tolerate sun much better than you'd expect for someone with skin this pale, although I tend to get a little pink for a few hours after sun exposure. Let's see… I have extremely pale skin (most drugstore foundations run too dark for me in the winter) with decidedly yellow and olive undertones to the point where it took me twenty years (!) to find a foundation that really matches. I've worn cool colours for most of my life, partially out of preference, but IDK, something isn't right there. If you have hazel eyes that are light but lean more green/chartreuse than blue, this season is a strong one to consider if you can’t quite figure out where you belong.Ī friend's mother was starting up in the colour analysis business closer to two decades ago and signed me up as a test patient– the result was some variation of soft summer. As they often have mousier “dishwater” tones in that blonde, they might assume that mousiness = “Cool” but in fact, like the hazy, grayed-brown tones of late Summer/early Autumn, neutrality can also lean warm.ĭrew Barrymore is a good example of this, as she was quite blonde as a child and leans blonde as an adult but looks better in the neutral warm colors because of the warmth of her eyes. Soft Autumns are the blonder of the Autumns and as they were often very blonde as children, they can automatically assume they belong in lighter seasons, associating blonde with Spring or Summer. I think “Soft Autumn” is the most confusing season to decipher because SAs lean neutral and can wear both cooler and warmer colors, like cooler purples and warmer/olive greens. Had it stayed as light but simply looked creamier/warmer, the look would have worked. ![]() She’s often listed as a “Soft Summer” but the conflict between her natural coloring and the hair, which needed more warmth but without red, was obvious in this film. I noticed while watching the movie “Easy Virtue” (2008) how subtle this discordant look can be, with Jessica Biel in platinum blonde. However, there is a significant distinction and weirdly enough, if you get it wrong, these are the seasons where you can look really “off” if you don’t get the cast right. I’ve noticed these are the most complex seasons to determine because they can be very chameleon-like, next to different colors. If you suspect you are a “soft” season, you’ll really benefit from a professional draping/consultation.

![]() ![]() The driving position is good – much better than the mid-engined Ferrari and Lamborghini road cars of the period – with pedals that are only slightly offset, and there is plenty of room for regular footwear. Access is straightforward and he sits quietly as I familiarise myself with the controls. As he pulls over by Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram building to let me take the wheel, Toledano is well aware that the charismatic engine has already made an impression on me. Toledano’s car is one of the last built, a 1981 model that was BMW’s press car for a time, and it is in glorious original condition. And you can read more about those on pages 78-79. Marque experts now think that only 399 street cars were actually built, plus a further 54 race cars. When BMW decided to develop the M1 as a new purpose-built race car for Group 4 and 5 racing, it created a new version of that race engine designated M88/1 (see pages 74-76), developed for the 400 cars required for homologation. Paul Rosche and his team had created a pure race engine – the M49/2 – for Group 5 and IMSA racing and fitted it to the 3.5 CSL race car, which Peter Gregg and Brian Redman drove to victory in the 1976 24 Hours of Daytona, BMW’s first major victory on American soil. To say that the M1 is only about the engine would be inaccurate, but that straight-six is a masterpiece. The lights of Times Square amplify the sensation of speed, while the walls of glass and polished stone reflect the M1’s orange wedge shape and its operatic voice to profound effect. The ride height is reasonable and the tyres’ sidewalls – by today’s standards – are generous. Watch it ride over the potholed avenues of Manhattan and the suspension actually looks supple. In the modern context, the M1’s usability becomes even more striking. So yes, it’s a race car, but one you really can use on the road. The Giugiaro silhouette is clean, sharp, elegant, and its glassfibre bodywork exhibits an unusually impressive level of fit and finish. Opening the engine cover reveals an engine set as low as possible in the chassis – thanks to dry-sump lubrication – yet there’s also a generous and practical carpeted cargo area. ![]() Look closely and those race-car details are evident everywhere, from the air intakes and airflow management of the bodywork, to the formula-car length of the rear suspension’s lower control arms, peeking out below the valance. The M1 is a particularly well-resolved example of this. ‘These cars are just so special, and everything about them was there for a purpose – they were designed to win races, then turned into street cars, rather than the other way around.’ So, in addition to the M1, his garage now houses a Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, Lancia 037, Porsche 924 GTS Carrera Club Sport, and a Peugeot 205 T16. He instantly became a convert to cars of its era and, in particular, competition cars for the road, such as the M, and other homologation specials. To translate for our international audience: Phil loved the M1, especially the howl and thrust of the race-bred straight-six as it neared the red line. well, the first time I gave it some wellie it was like my balls were on fire! I haven’t looked back since.’ Then the dealer said “Why don’t you try the M1?” I had never thought about getting an M1 before that moment but, since I was there, I gave it a try. ‘I was at a dealer to drive a De Tomaso Mangusta, which is a stunning car to look at, but I was disappointed when I drove it. A chance encounter with an M1 changed that. ![]() When he started his car collection he favoured Italian beauties such as the Ferrari Dino 246 GT, Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato and Iso Grifo. Born in London, Toledano is an artist and photographer who has called Manhattan home for over 25 years. It’s six o’clock on a Sunday morning and we have some of the most famous streets in the world almost to ourselves. This is how Phillip Toledano enjoys his collection, in dawn raids on a deserted New York City. And at this ungodly hour, the neon- lit quietude of Times Square is ruptured by the bark of a race-derived straight-six revving to the limiter and the explosions of unburnt fuel on the overrun, together announcing the arrival of the bright orange BMW M1. The darkest hour of the day is just before dawn. So let’s test it on the streets of Manhattan. BMW’s M1 was bred for the track yet turned out an unusually refined supercar. ![]() ![]() How do You Change the World?
